We love getting the best interiors advice from the experts in the industry which is why we´ve asked Anna Smith, owner of chic new homewares collection, Also Home, to give us her guidance on how to successfully acheive a modern Oriental look in our homes.
Q: How can I get the oriental theme in my home without lots of garish colour and accessories?
A: So often when we think of the Oriental theme we imagine brightly coloured Chinese lanterns and cheap red or black plastic. I love to bring a sense of the Orient and my travels to far flung places into my home in a more elegant and understated way. I am always influenced and inspired by the stunning oriental spas and hotels I visit on my travels. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, there is always a beautiful finishing touch or detail to be inspired by.
Black is great combined with white and ivory if it is used in small amounts. Our black ribbed bowl, £30, which is perfect for placing orchids in was inspired by a wonderful hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam and they way they displayed their orchids. Ourblack bamboo storage baskets, from £12, are ideal in any room for hiding away any clutter. Inspired by hotel bedrooms I like to start with crisp white bed linen from £12, and hand quilted bedspreads, £150. Keep it simple and elegant and fold the bedspread across the bottom of the bed rather than completely covering it. Then simply add a few unique silk cushions, £30, and accessories. Add accents of colour such as deep red and pale jade to any room combined with ivory, white and black.
You can also create a chic oriental theme for your dining room table. Understated and elegant oriental inspired ceramics and dining products, from £8, can be used for any occasion. I love to combine ivory silk/viscose runners, £20, across the table with black lacquer placemats and coasters, £40 for a set of four. I then add silver plated charger plates, pale jade and black plates and dishes.
